Reaching out to visual artists
Whether you are an emerging or seasoned artist, here’s your opportunity to find out more about the Originals Only Art Show program that has become one of the Comox Valley’s premiere art events.
On Monday, March 29 from 7 pm to 9 pm, the Originals Only Group of artists will be holding an information session in the Comox Community Centre at 1855 Noel Avenue in Comox.
“ While Originals Only is going into its 9th year of operation,” said Joe Smith, a member of the organizing committee, “ we felt that because of the influx of new artists to the Island, this would be an ideal time to put on a ‘show and tell’ event that explains the program and provides an overview of how artists can get involved.”
Originals Only was created as an opportunity for visual artists working at all levels to learn from each other and provide them with a venue so that they can showcase their work, It was also designed to provide the general public with an opportunity to learn more about the creative process, styles of art and meet face to face with the artists.
Operated under the auspices of Comox Recreation, the program has been very successful and now attracts participants from across Vancouver Island, the outer islands and Powell River. On average there are now 60 to 70 artists who take part in a summer art show that is held the second weekend in August at Marina Park in Comox, which has become a major attraction for both tourists and local art lovers. In addition a winter show is held at the community centre in Comox where up to 50 artists can participate
With funding cuts to many arts programs, Originals Only is self-supporting and does not rely on government grants to sustain itself. “ I think that is the key to our success,” said Smith. “ Whatever we do as part of the program, we rely on the participants to take on a task and when it comes to holding an event, there is a nominal fee which covers expenses. With this current round of cuts to the arts, it is essential that artists work together within the community to ensure programs do not die.”
The Originals Only shows are open to participation by visual artists working at all levels. To find out more about Originals Only you can visit the website at www.originalsonly.ca
Better still, plan on attending the information night where you will have the opportunity to speak directly with some of the participating artists, ask questions and peruse displays that help explain the program.
