Life Drawing Exhibition Opportunity at Oceanside Arts Council Gallery in Parksville, March 2012

Mehdi Naimi and the Oceanside Arts Council would like to invite the artists in the Lifers Group or any other regional life drawing groups to take part in a nude/figure art show at the Oceanside Community Arts Council art gallery (http://www.oceansideartscouncil.com/) in March of 2012.

'The show will run for the whole month and we can have a reception on the first Friday evening in March. So the show will be semi-informal in the sense that not all works have to be framed. But they should be ready to be hung. We can tack or stick works-on-paper to the wall. We will have to limit the number of works depending on the numbers and the works can be for sale. (The gallery takes a commission of 30%) . Anything else you need to know? Ask me.'

A Horse-Drawn Vehicle for Visual Expression

Please find attached information and map regarding an interesting drawing opportunity on MONDAY DEC 12th that could become an ongoing event if there is continued interest. Apparently there are the required number of artists committed to showing up and paying the modest donation to the Therapeutic Riding Association. If there are others out there interested in getting on board contact Pauline Battle at:
Thank you for your patience. I was waiting to hear from everyone before booking the date.
I have yet to hear from one last person, but as time is flying by we will book the MONDAY Dec12th at the barn 4:30 - 6:30

Show up at the barn, come inside and gather at the long table. We will collect the $10.00 fee and have a sign in sheet. Dress warmly, Laureli will put the heat on for us and we can sit close by the heat source or we can place our chairs around the subject in the indoor ring. No supplies are included so bring what you require. We will have a horse stand for the first part of the session and can also l put him on the lunge so he will be in motion. You may bring a camera and take photos if you require.

THE BARN IS AT 4839 HEADQUARTER RD. IN COURTENAY, behind and over from the Curling Rink (across from Vanier). Your drawing fee will be a donation to the Comox Valley Therapeutic Riding Society. If this session works we can book another session or make it a weekly or monthly event.

Thanks for your support.

Possible daytime drawing at The Muir Gallery: info from Brian Buckrell

The Comox Valley Arts Council has begun evening life drawing classes
in Muir Gallery . I went there for their evening session this week. Good set up. Good lighting.

I don't enjoy going out at night to paint so I discussed a daytime session. They are willing to do a trial - a life drawing session on Monday mornings- the day the gallery is closed. I suggest 10 people limit to see how it goes. They are willing to run a three week trial beginning a week Monday - Mondays Nov 28, Dec 5 and 12 from 9 to 11 AM. To make it work for them we are asking $30 to pay for the three sessions ($ 10 for each of the three days - covers model and makes a contribution to their overhead at Muir). It insures stability and makes the effort worth while for them. You could trade off your day with someone else if you could not make it.
It looks like we have 5 committed. Need 5 more to make it go. If there was interest, we could discuss how best to organize it for the New Year. I wouldn't mind one session periodically with longer posses and clothed ( even partially) for painting with colour and some for portrait painting.

Anyone interested please contact me back at bbuckrell@shaw.ca as soon as possible. First come first served.
Thanks.

As an adolescent in the '70's, I vaguely remember exploring this tome that belonged to a friends parents after we unearthed it from the bottom of a drawer when they were away. I remember being mesmerized...by the line quality of the exquisite and beautifully rendered figurative ink drawings. The original edition is celebrating it's 40th anniversary. Read about how the book was illustrated and view an interview with one of the illustrators, Chris Foss on the BBC...HERE.

October 27th drawing session

I am glad I showed up for last night's drawing session. The model was dynamic, even in repose. And there was good, creative energy in the group.

Figurative artist John Newman is featured as part of a CBC program Tapestry. You can listen to the episode 'When Mind and Medicine Meet' HERE.

'...John Newman is a renowned Canadian artist and teacher who is celebrated for his depictions of the human form. But after a paralyzing stroke, he lost the only thing he says makes life worth living - his ability to draw. Now he is using sheer willpower to get it back.'

Summer and Autumn Life Drawing Opportunity

For the love of life and beauty

Hello artistic people! I am a 24 year old newly engaged newly pregnant gal who’s got a flair for modeling (or.. staying perfectly still!)

As a lover of art and beauty I can’t imagine anything more beautiful or true than that of a transforming pregnant body. This sacred path from woman to mother is now profoundly represented in my pregnant body and I would love to share this with others who seek such beauty in form.

I am offering 3 drawing sessions over the next 3-4 months. The first at 23 weeks pregnant (5 months) the second at 29/30 weeks (6.5 months) and the third at 35/36 weeks (8 months)

The first of these sessions will be held on Monday, August 22nd from 6:30pm- 8:30pm at 237 5th street in a clothing store called Fiction. Bring a chair to sit on and a surface to draw on. (Location and date of future sessions to be discussed later on)

If you know this is something you’d love to be a part of and are flexible enough to commit to all 3 sessions, I am offering all 3 for $40. I will keep track with a receipt book and can refund if something comes up. If you can only commit to one the drop-in fee will be $15/per session.

I hope all of you are having a wonderful summer and that it doesn’t keep you from occasionally checking your email!

You can contact me by email ~ joyfrog@hotmail.com~

Thanks very much and talk to you soon J

an article in 'In Focus' Magazine by Ian Lidster with photos by Boomer Jerrit provides insight into being a life model for artists. If you life draw in any of the valley's life drawing groups some of the people you draw are interviewed about the trials and rewards of modelling.

Look for the item in the current edition of 'In Focus' or read it online HERE.
